Figure Skating
When aspiring doctor Sarah Hughes won the women’s figure skating event at the Salt Lake 2002 Games, she fell to her knees in shock and joy with her coach. But she already had her sights set on another achievement. “My next goal,” she said, “is to get in the high 1500s on my SATs.”
It was just one of many extraordinary events at the Salt Lake Ice Center, where men and women competed in the singles, pairs and ice dancing events. Dual gold medals were awarded to the pairs of Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikhaurlidze of Russia, and Jamie Salé and David Pelletier of Canada. Skating to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” France’s Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat won the ice dancing; and in the men’s event, Alexi Yagudin pulled off five triple jumps and won the gold.
