Alpine skiing

The Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic alpine program included downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom, with athletes competing in one of several categories based on their functional ability. (In Paralympic competition, a results calculation system allows athletes with different impairments to compete against each other.)

On March 9, Germany’s Gerd Schoenfelder won the gold medal in the men’s downhill — the first of four gold medals he would earn at the Salt Lake 2002 Paralympics. Also making history on March 9 was the U.S. team, which became the first to win all three medals in the downhill sit-ski class thanks to the performances of Sarah Will, Muffy Davis and Stephani Victor.

The U.S. women’s team continued its momentum on March 11, with Sarah Billmeier, Allison Jones and Sandy Dukat taking all three medals in the LW10, 11, 12 class of the super G race.

Among the highlights in the men’s super G was Martin “The Rabbit” Braxenthaler winning his second gold medal in two days for Germany; American skier Chris Devlin-Young became the first Paralympian to win medals in both the standing and sit-ski classes.

Despite getting out-gunned by Braxenthaler in the men’s giant slalom, American Chris Waddell earned the bronze, bringing his all-time Paralympic Winter Games medal total to 12. In the women’s slalom, Will became the first women’s mono-skier to win four alpine gold medals at one Paralympic Winter Games.
